What is copal?

Copal usually refers to the aromatic resin obtained from the dried sap of the Copal tree, Protium copal, which is native to Mexico and Central America. However, it is only one of a large group of Copal resins found in many tropical and subtropical areas of the world. The resin of the Protium tree is the traditional incense of the South American Andean peoples.

About the smell of copal

Copal has a mild, warm, soft, earthy scent of citrus pine, unobtrusive smell.

Effects

Copal relaxes, harmonizes , purifies and creates a positive atmosphere before treatment (shamanic tradition).
Known for its calming effects, it is rich in triterpenes, which have been shown to reduce anxiety. The smoke from this resin is said to activate "ion" channels in the brain, which helps relieve stress and anxiety. These calming effects of the bath also allow the body to relax, unwind and prepare for sleep. It has been used since ancient times to promote emotional balance and to calm the nervous system.

What is the difference between copals?

Copal incense comes in different versions with a similar scent. Black copal is considered by some to be the most desirable because of its rich and intense scent. Golden copal has the sweetest smell. White copal has a sweeter scent than black copal, but is not as rich or as sweet as golden copal. All three can be used interchangeably, and the choice is left to the individual.
