What is Palo Santo or Holy Wood?
Palo Santo (Bursera Graveolens) is a wild-growing mystical tree that thrives along the coasts of Central and South America in seasonally dry tropical forests. It belongs to the same tree family as Myrrh and Frankincense. The tree can reach up to 15 meters in height. What sandalwood represents in India, Palo Santo represents in South America. The name Palo Santo in Spanish means holy wood.
Palo Santo wood develops its aroma with healing and mystical properties only when the tree or its part dies and rests in its natural environment for 4 to 10 years. The tree typically lives for 80 to 90 years. For millennia, Palo Santo has been used by Incan shamans and healers in the Amazon region. In traditional medicine, it is used in the form of wood, resin, and oil. Its wonderful properties have made it widely known around the world as one of nature's greatest aromatic treasures in recent years.
How to use Palo Santo
Palo Santo is most commonly used as incense to cleanse negative energies, similar to white sage, while also attracting creativity, love, and happiness.
South American Indians and shamans have traditionally used it for centuries in their healing, spiritual, and magical ceremonies and rituals. It creates a pleasant sweet-smelling smoke with hints of mint and citrus, repelling mosquitoes and other insects. It is also said to ward off evil spirits and attract the good ones. It is highly suitable for meditation preparations, as its scent purifies and raises vibrations, enabling a deeper connection with the Source.
When lighting a piece or stick of Palo Santo, let it burn for half to one minute, holding it at a 45-degree angle to ensure proper ignition. Then extinguish the flame and let the incense smolder (gently wave the stick to enhance smoldering) in your workspace, home, car, bathroom, or wherever you want to purify the energy. The rich aromatic scent evokes positive feelings and peace. Enjoy the unique fragrance.
When finished, place the Palo Santo stick in a fireproof metal, glass, or ceramic container to let it extinguish on its own or use gentle blowing to prolong its smoldering and smoking. Always handle fire with care and respect.
Traditional Use in Folk Medicine
In South America, Palo Santo is traditionally used to alleviate common colds, flu symptoms, stress, asthma, headaches, anxiety, depression, inflammations, emotional pain, etc. It is also used to calm agitation and tension.
