Shungite is a rare mineral composed of carbon and silicon. It is one of the oldest minerals on Earth, nearly 2 billion years old and thought to have formed from the deposits of seaweed and bacteria. The largest deposit is in Karelia, Russia. The hardness of shungite is 3.5 - 4 on the Mohs scale.
