"Smudging" is an ancient Native American practice of ritually burning herbs and plants to cleanse negative energy, to protect a person or place. The practice of burning medicinal or sacred plants has been used around the world for centuries. In America, the practice was used by many Indian tribes who used holy smoke to cleanse, bless and spiritually cleanse themselves and their surroundings. Many believe that the power of sacred herbs can rid a person or place of unwanted thoughts, sadness, anxiety, misfortune, impurities, ill health and bad energy and emotions. In this way, they regain a good mood and peace and harmony in their interior as well as in the environment.
They burn incense in a shell or clay vessel, while saying prayers. The smoke is traditionally blown with a pen or hand and directed at a person, across the room or towards the sky.
The four basic elements required for a traditional incense ceremony:
1. Vessel, traditionally a shell - represents water.
2. Sacred plants such as cedar, sage, sweet grass and tobacco - represent the gifts of mother earth.
3. The flame of fire used to ignite the sacred of plants - represents fire.
4. The feather or the hand with which we blow into the smoke and direct it - represents the air.
The ceremony with incense is often performed before a ceremony or before an important meeting. It is also performed when moving into a new home, after an argument, illness and other occasions. Such rituals are still practiced all over the world. It should always be done with purpose, respect and deep gratitude.
